Cold Cave

October 19, 2011

Crybaby Synthpop is not a genre that gets a ton of airtime here at the bike shop, but when the mood is right, there is no substitute.  The Cure, Joy Division, Depeche Mode as well as modern classics like Future Islands and The Faint will find their way onto a playlist every now and then.

Sometimes, even whole albums will make their way into regular rotation like Cold Cave’s “Cherish the Light Years”.  Released in 2011, but with a sound that isn’t a day past 1987, there’s a pinch-their-cheeks cuteness about a band that so clearly loves their idols that they sound just like them.

If you grit your teeth when you hear a band whose sound is lifted wholesale from another, more famous band, then skip it.  But, if you’ve got a hankering for synthpop and your copy of Disintegration is worn too thin to play, then this may be your ticket to a land of emo bliss.

Listen.
