Peste Noire

August 30, 2011

Black Metal…

…in French?

…with a chamber ensemble?

…and funked out disco?!

Oh, it’s weird alright, but Peste Noire’s latest album, L’Ordure a l’etat Pur, is undeniably appealing.  Given that black metal vocals are usually indecipherable in English, Norse, or Swedish, the fact that the vocals are in French hardly matters.  In fact, the verbal language barrier only highlights the wonder of universality in musical language, and on this album Peste Noire demonstrates a dizzying musical multilingualism.

Traditional French balladry, punk riffage, ethereal string interludes, disco, doom, raging guitar solos, milk curdling screams, angelic howls, and a wall of noise are woven together into a black metal tapestry that is bizarre but rewarding.

Listen.

while riffing doomingly through the interludage of disco raging, my metal tapestry untangled and now rests upon the floor. any ideas? the ether, angelic howls, and all are but noise in the background now.
