Beirut – The Rip Tide

There is a wide variety of music that finds it’s way into heavy rotation on the bike shop stereo.  Of the many genres, subgenres, and sub-subgenres that are represented on any given day, a large portion of the sounds could be easily lumped into the broad category of “Unlistenable by Socially Well-Adjusted Citizens”: black metal, psychedelia, mash ups, screw music, harsh noise, etc.

In spite of these aural tendencies, Beirut has somehow found a prominent place on the charts.  Beirut is on the other end of the spectrum: tonal, rhythmic, and downright enjoyable.  Their new album, The Rip Tide, has hardly any of the suicidal undercurrent that I usually look for in pop music.  Most enjoyable and easily one of my favorites albums of the year.
