Cee-Lo Green

February 22, 2011

Classic soul is not a genre that finds heavy representation in my music collection.  It certainly doesn’t offend my sensibilities, but it rarely inspires either.  So, it’s somewhat surprising that I can’t stop listening to Cee-Lo Green’s album, “The Lady Killer” because it’s by-the-numbers Smokey Robinson.  At the same time, I’m a sucker for songs that feature music that is stylistically out of sync with the lyrics (e.g. Scott Walker, Jim O’Rourke), and there are few songs with a sharper music/lyrics contrast than the album’s hit single “Fuck You”.  Genius.

Very seldom is a piece of music simultaneously that funny and that good. The clean version was hysterical; the filthy version sublime.
