Statesville, NC

November 30, 2010

So, what do people who work in bike shops do on vacation?

Ride bikes and visit other bike shops, of course!

Statesville, NC is home to First Flight Bicycles and Lake Norman State Park which makes it a surprisingly pleasant waypoint to indulge in both activities in one stop.

Lake Norman State Park features 17.5 miles of smooth singletrack so fast and smooth that brakes are almost optional.  Consisting of three loops of escalating difficulty, the Hawk Loop, the Mombo Loop, and the Laurel Loop, that when stitched together made for a great afternoon of wide-smiled riding.  When the additional 13 miles of trail planned for this park are completed in the next couple of years, Lake Norman will be more than a pleasant stop, it’ll be a worthwhile destination for mountain bikers.

First Flight Bicycles is a totally dreamy bike shop housed in a historic, two story building in downtown Statesville.  This is the type of bike shop that I hope Back Alley Bikes is for other folks; it’s a bike shop where what they have for sale is secondary to the community-welcoming atmosphere.  Super friendly and laid back.

As for the physical shop itself, it is filled (literally, totally, completely filled) with cool, old bike stuff.  They call their mind-boggling collection of mountain bike memorabilia the Museum of Mountain Bike Art and Technology (MOMBAT), and I could’ve easily spent an entire day pouring over the prototype frames, the anodized derailleurs, and the artifacts of mountain bike gadgetry.  Unfortunately, the day was growing short and I had to leave before my desire to explore was exhausted, but now I’ve got a reason to return.
