Detroit’s Abandoned Velodrome

August 25, 2010

When I lived in Detroit, my friends and I would ride out to the Dorais Velodrome and try our damndest to ride this track. Long abandoned and crumbling, this forgotten gem in a city full of sunken treasure was once the training ground for Mike Walden’s famous Wolverines. Over three hundred Olympic medalists trained on this track, including Lance Armstrong’s former teammate, Frankie Andreu. For the past 20 years it’s been just another overgrown dumping ground on the edge of a dying city, but it may have a chance yet.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

At last, the perfect place for the fixed gear mountain bike!

I actually put cross tires on my fixed gear to ride it the first time, but it was definitely overkill. As long as you lipped smoothly off the one big gap, it was mostly smooth sailing.
