Bike Porn Tour

April 1, 2010

The phrase “Bike Porn” usually refers to photographs of rare or expensive bike stuff that bike nerds drool over while imagining how much their riding would improve if only their bike had that _______ like the bike in the picture.  But there is a troupe of bike punks who’ve interpreted the phrase much more literally, as pornography involving bicycles, and their cross country tour stopped in Carrboro last night.

The flier describes the film as “Amateur Bicycle Erotica”, which it most certainly was, but it was so much more.  The atmosphere was more tent revival than seedy theater, and the show itself was way beyond a simple film screening.  It was a night of singing, dancing, preaching, and unbridled bike lust.

The film itself was a collection of short films from bike geeks from all over the country.  All the clips were light-hearted, even the most sexually explicit scenes featured smiling participants, and a surprising number of clips probably could’ve aired publicly with a PG rating.   The first half of the movie was pretty heavily loaded with the tame stuff, but by the halfway point all the stops had been pulled and the myriad ways in which humans and bikes can couple (or triple or quintuple) were graphically explored.

Before attending last night’s performance, the connection between radical sexuality and bikes seemed more like peanut butter and ketchup than peanut butter and chocolate, but after a surprisingly impassioned performance by Reverend Phil and company I might just be a believer.

This isn’t a show for the faint of heart, but if you’re comfortable with public nudity and you like bikes, then this is probably the best touring bike punk amateur erotica show you’ll ever see.
