When in Rome…

December 28, 2009

Five days is a long time to spend in someone else’s house, especially when you’re ten miles away from your old neighborhood and friends.  So close, yet so far.  Luckily, two out of three of the bikes in Heather’s parents’ garage were rideable with only bare minimum service.  The only effective tools available were an adjustable wrench and a hammer, both of which came in handy during the 15 minute “tune up”.  Due in large part to the exceptionally flat terrain we were easily able to bike 40 miles on Saturday, making the rounds and visiting our old haunts.

Our plan was to head out again today, but we awoke to the blanket of white that was three days behind schedule.  We’re sorely unprepared for winter riding, but a couple of coat hangers, duct tape, and pop bottles makes a fine set of fenders in a pinch.  The Red Huffy that Heather’s riding was easy to equip because it has no cables, but the clapped out Gary Fisher I’m on has these new fangled “cable-actuated brake calipers” that were a little more challenging to work around.  Again, we’ve made due.
