Kniner Kramp9 RDO
January 24, 2013
Last night I finished building the front wheel for my new Surly Krampus, and I couldn’t resist doing two stupid things that have surely voided multiple warranties and can’t be recommended against strongly enough:
1) I set the front tire up tubeless using an unhealthy amount of Stan’s tape, two scoops of sealant, and a filleted 24″ inner tube (but I saved almost 400 grams of rotational mass).
and
2) Without an appropriate bike to put this amazing wheel on, I decided instead put it on the least appropriate bike I could find: my full carbon, full suspension Niner Jet9 RDO!
When the fork is bottomed out does the tire clear the crown? Nope.
Is it safe? Hell no!
Is it fun? Hell yeah!

That’s crazy, but cool. How does bottoming the fork affect axle to crown distance and cause the tire to rub? Other than flex, that dimension doesn’t change.
The axle to bridge distance remains the same, and the clearance there is ample, but when the fork bottoms out the crown (where the steer tube attaches to the fork) lands squarely on the tire:

Got it. My bad. Misunderstood the terms. Thanks!
Not to stir anything, but who ever gets full travel on Fox forks anyways, let alone bottoms them out? Unless of course you run them WAY too soft =)
It’s true. In the real world, I’ve never fully bottomed a Fox fork out, but I still bumped the pressure up just a smidge to play it safe.
Rationally massive!
You’re a bad influence, Jason!
Jason, How’d you get the tire? I’ve been waiting for months for QBP to start carrying The Knard.
Preordered it in July!
