Thank You 2,093 Times!!!
Electronically-transmitted, plastic keyboard-typed words are totally inadequate for expressing the immense gratitude that I feel for all the folks that have kept this shop open for the last 2,093 days.
In the final weeks of 2012, the overwhelming volume of cookies, cards, beer, coffee, tips, and simple “thank you”s that we received put me in a reflectively wistful mood during our holiday break, so I’d like to take a moment to reciprocate:

- Thanks for riding your bike. Whether or not you ever have or ever will spend a single penny in this bike shop, I’m glad that you’re out there riding. In the famous words of H.G. Wells, “When I see an adult on a bicycle, I do not despair for the future of the human race”.
- Thanks for breaking your bike. Regardless of whether it was a simple flat tire, a taco’d wheel, or a home repair gone horribly wrong, in a way, it’s a good thing that it happened. After all, where would any of us be in life if it weren’t for all the challenges, both big and small? Almost as importantly, what would happen to the bike shops of the world if these things never broke?
- Thanks for bringing your bike to Back Alley Bikes. Where to bring their broken bike may have felt like a small decision for a lot of folks who’ve come here over the years, but it has had profoundly meaningful consequences for this bike shop. For nearly six years, I, and all the folks that have worked here over the years, have had a place to live, food to eat, and a pretty rad place to work because of your decision to drag your broken bike through our front door.
There are a million more reasons to be grateful that I could attempt to list here, but that would put a serious crimp in our ride time, yours and mine. So, turn off the damn computer already and get back out there!
Oh, and Happy New Year!!!
